Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else. (I. Calvino)
Alexa Meyerman, Frank Havermans and NL Architects each highlight the theme of "Invisible City" from a different perspective by means of their own fascinating styles and techniques. Cities and buildings may turn out to have a life of their own that human planning and cognition are only scarcely able to grasp!
The exhibition focusses on the dualism between what can and cannot be seen or known, be it in the past, the present or the future. Transparency, knowledge and control have long been considered generally desirable. Now that they are increasingly at the core of modern life, and consequences become more tangible, questions arise about human capacity to really understanding reality on the one side and the desirability of reaching total transparency and control on the other.
